ROME, N.Y. – NYU, the second-ranked Division III Women’s Golf team in the country, opened a commanding 15 stroke lead over 14th ranked Wellesley College after the first round of the Liberty League Women’s Golf Championship at Teugega Country Club.
The Violets’ five players combined for a three over par score on the 5,583-yard par 71 layout. Shih Ting Tan and Yoyo Fu each shot even par for NYU to share medalist honors at the halfway point of the two-day event. Inha Jun completed a Violet sweep of the top three spots by shooting one over par. Wellesley’s Savannah Boyd stopped the NYU run, posting a 73. She was matched by a fourth NYU player as Sonia Hao also shot 73.
Union College and Ithaca College are locked in a tight battle for third place with the Garnet Chargers leading the Bombers by four strokes at the halfway mark. Iyene Essien is the top Union player in a tie for sixth with NYU’s Tiya Chowdary and Sophia Lewis of Wellesley at four over.
St. Lawrence, Vassar and William Smith round out the first day scoring.
