A trio of Yellowjackets from the University of Rochester men's track and field team will represent Rochester at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships next week, following the announcement of the meet qualifiers on Friday evening by the NCAA.
Thrower Jordan Johnson, jumper Cole Goodman and multi-event athlete Gabe Thyne, all seniors, made the national meet that will take place next Thursday through Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The North Coast Athletic Conference and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission are serving as hosts of the meet.
Overall, the top-22 declared student-athletes for each individual event made the field, with the top-16 declared relay teams also being selected.
Goodman leads Rochester in terms of nationals experience outdoors, making his third straight postseason competition. He qualified in 2025 in the triple jump and will enter the competition as the #12 seed after a season-best jump of 14.84 meters from the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic back in mid-April. Goodman is the defending NCAA champion in the outdoor triple jump after posting a Rochester school-record 15.76 meter leap at the 2024 championships in South Carolina. The senior is a four-time outdoor All-American, earning top-8 finishes in both the long jump and triple jump at the last two NCAA meets.
Johnson's remarkable senior season continues as he will compete in both the hammer throw and javelin competitions at NCAA's. Johnson hit his qualifying marks at the Liberty League Outdoor Championships earlier this month, earning conference Field Performer of the Meet honors in the process. He enters the nationals competition as the #8 seed in the hammer throw and the #19 seed in the javelin. His qualifying mark in the hammer is 61.16 meters (200'8'') and in the javelin it is 62.09 meters (203'8''), both new Rochester school records.
Thyne was one of the last qualifiers into the meet after posting a score of 6,512 points in the decathlon to win the All-Atlantic Regional title on Thursday afternoon at Williams College. He enters the multi-event competition as the 15th seed with his new personal-best score that was attained by notching new PR's in five of the ten events across the competition.
The decathlon has been one of the top events Rochester has competed in all-time at the outdoor championships, with Thyne's appearance being the 11th in school history.
Both the triple jump and hammer throw will be the fifth qualification in school history, while Johnson's javelin qualification is the first for a Rochester men's field athlete all-time.
Looking ahead to the nationals schedule Thyne kicks things off on Thursday morning with the 100 meters at 11:30 am. The rest of the decathlon events on day one include the long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters, which will run at approximately 4:40 pm. Also, competing on Thursday will be Johnson in the javelin, with that competition kicking off at 5:45 pm.
During Friday's events, only Thyne will compete, closing out the decathlon with the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters. Events start at 10 am that day and conclude at approximately 4:30 pm.
The Yellowjackets wrap up their events on Saturday's final day, starting with Johnson in the hammer throw finals at 11 am. The triple jump competition commences at 1:45 pm with Goodman looking to go for back-to-back NCAA titles.
