Manchester, Conn. – The Vassar College Women's Tennis team earned a 4-0 victory over Hunter College on Friday afternoon to open play in the NCAA Tournament. Friday's victory marks the first win in the tournament for the Brewers since 2012 and marks the sixth time the Brewers have advanced to the Second Round.
Vassar wins its seventh straight match with Friday's triumph and improves to 15-5 overall on the season. Hunter concludes the year at 7-7.
Doubles
- Vassar opened a quick 1-0 lead in doubles play against the Hawks with victories at the top two positions.
- The Brewers' top pair of Erin McCusker (Norton, MA) and Sofie Shen (New York, NY) blanked their opponents from Hunter 6-0, improving to 7-6 on the second.
- At the second slot, Sara Lippin (Chappaqua, NY) and Macey Dowd (Orinda, CA) teamed together for the first time season and posted a 6-1 victory.
- Vassar's third pair of Elyse Duley (Charlotte, NC) and Maddie Kirby (Davidson, NC) were leading 5-0 at the time the doubles point was clinched.
Singles
- The Brewers closed out the match on Friday with victories at the fourth, fifth and sixth positions.
- Kirby clinched the victory for Vassar at the fourth slot, blanking the opponent from Hunter 6-0, 6-0. The victory was Kirby's first of the year at the fourth position and improved her to 6-6 overall on the season in singles play.
- Shen was victorious at the fifth slot for Vassar with a 6-0, 6-0 victory, a win that moved her singles record to 6-4 on the season.
- At the sixth slot, Lippin moved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory for the Brewers.
- At the time the match was clinched, McCusker at one, Dowd at two and Duley at three were all leading their respective matches.
