Manchester, Conn. – The Vassar College Women's Tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 4-0 loss to Amherst College on Saturday afternoon in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Brewers battled into a third set in four of the six singles matches against the Mammoths.
Saturday's loss stops a seven-match winning streak for the Brewers and closes their season with a 15-6 overall record. Amherst moves on to play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday in the Third Round.
Doubles
- The Mammoths opened an early 1-0 lead in the match after taking doubles decisions at the second and third position.
- Vassar's middle pair of Iris Li and Macey Dowd suffered just their fourth loss of the spring, falling to 13-4 in 17 decisions, following a 6-2 loss on Saturday.
- The Brewers' top pair of Erin McCusker and Sofie Shen were leading their match 4-2 when the doubles point was clinched.
Singles
- Despite dropping the three singles matches that went final, the Brewers forced a third frame in four contests.
- At the third position, Dowd opened a 1-0 lead after outlasting Amherst's Deliala Friedman 7-6 (8-6) in the opening frame. Friedman came back with a 6-2 win in the second set before Dowd jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the third when the match was clinched.
- Li rallied back to knot the second singles match at 1-1 after dropping the opening frame 6-0. After falling behind in the second set, Li battled to a 7-6 (7-4) victory to force a third stanza.
- Likewise at the sixth slot, Kirby ran out to a 1-0 lead with a 6-4 opening set victory. Amherst's Cody Huang came back to take the final two frames by scores of 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Mammoths.
- Playing at the top flight, McCusker opened the contest with an impressive 6-2 first set victory. Amherst's Lily Dounchis evened the contest with a 6-2 second set win before the duo was deadlocked at 5-5 in the third set at the time the match was clinched.
