All seven Liberty League men's golf programs are set to meet April 25-28 at the 2025 Liberty League Men's Golf Championship. The three-round tournament takes place at Turning Stone's Shenandoah Golf Course (par 72) in Verona, N.Y. Tee times begin at noon on Friday (4/25) and Saturday (4/26) while Sunday's round (4/27) gets underway at 11 am.
Hobart College is this year's host, and the Statesmen will be joined by Clarkson University, New York University (NYU), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Skidmore College, St. Lawrence University, and the University of Rochester. The top team of the three rounds earns the Liberty League automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship (May 20-23).
Rochester claimed its first Liberty League title since 2017 last April as the Yellowjackets totaled a three-day score of 870, which included a 1-under par round of 287 on the final day. They narrowly defeated St. Lawrence (873) and Skidmore (874), who finished second and third, respectively. The Thoroughbreds were followed by RPI (891), NYU (899), Clarkson (920), and Hobart (950).
The Yellowjackets are on the hunt for their first back-to-back Liberty League titles. As a team, Rochester has recorded three top-three finishes this year, including a second-place finish at the Northeast Elite Invitational in September and a tie for second at the Farmingdale Spring Invitational last week. Shibo Wang will lead the way for Rochester after finishing fifth with a score of 217 at last year's championship. This year, Wang tied for 11th among 104 golfers at the Northeast Elite Invitational with a two-round score of 143 (72-71). He is most recently coming off earning co-medalist honors at Farmingdale with a score of 139 (70-69). A pair of first years in Luke Evans and Alvin Su are poised to make some noise for the Yellowjackets at their first conference championship. Evans was the top rookie finisher at Farmingdale, just two strokes behind Wang in a tie for fifth (141—67-74). Su, a four-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week honoree, was the team's top performer at the Fred Kravetz Invitational. He tied for fourth with scores of 71 and 73 (144). At Farmingdale, he tied for 17th with a total score of 145 (76-69).
St. Lawrence will look to make some noise at the 2025 Championship after finishing as the team runner-up a year ago. Three of the team's golfers from last year are back, including Jimmy King, who earned medalist honors. He tallied a three-round score of 214 (73-69-72) then finished par on back-to-back playoff holes for the individual victory. Sam Lyman recorded a top-four finish with a 216, and Ben Scholes rounded out the Saints in 27th (232). This season, King is averaging 75.8 strokes per round, and his spring was highlighted by a tie for 17th at the Farmingdale Spring Invitational with a two-round total of 145 (72-73). He was also among the top 20 at the Williams Fall Invitational (14th, 150) and the St. Lawrence Fall Invitational (18th, 155). Lyman posted back-to-back rounds of 76 at Farmingdale for a two-round total of 152, tying for 57th. On Monday, he recorded a 73 (+1) at the Shenandoah course, tying for second with King in a dual match with SUNY Canton. Scholes won the Skidmore Fall Invitational among 120 golfers with a one-round score of 71. He was also second on the team at Farmingdale. He recorded a 79 and then trimmed seven strokes off his first-round total (72), totaling 151 for 48th overall.
Skidmore brings a veteran presence to the tournament with a pair of golfers who appeared at the 2024 Liberty League Championship and placed among the top six. Evan Forrest tied for first before falling in the playoff hole, he carded a three-round score of 214 (71-73-70), and Tate Esler tied for sixth with a total score of 219 (71-73-75). During the 2024-25 campaign, Forrest's best showing was at the Port City Classic, where he tied for 38th overall, shooting 233 over three rounds (75-79-79). He most recently recorded a two-round score of 150 (72-78) and tied for 45th at the Farmingdale Spring Invitational. Esler tied for first at the Skidmore Fall Invitational with a one-under score of 71, and he finished 20th at the Williams Fall Invitational, good for second on the team with a 152 (79-73). He closed out the regular season also in a tie for 76th at Farmingdale (176—75-81). First-year Patrick McLaughlin will be a Skidmore golfer to watch; he was the team's top performer at the Dr. Tim Brown Invitational, tying for 20th with a score of 145 (71-74). McLaughlin also finished 49th at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate with a three-day total of 225 (76-75-74).
RPI eyes a return atop the team podium as the Engineers claimed Liberty League titles in 2021 and 2023. They are an experienced squad with four golfers from the 2024 championship back in the lineup this year—Jacob Lindsay, Matt Buckley, Owen Himmer, and Ryan Komp. Lindsay paced the squad in 2024 with a three-round score of 220 (76-74-70) for ninth, while Buckley was right behind him with a score of 221 (73-76-72) for 10th. Himmer (21st, 228) and Komp (27th, 232) also finished among the top 30. This season, RPI has posted six top-three team finishes at tournaments, including a team victory at the Farmingdale Spring Invitational and a second-place finish at Skidmore's Dr. Tim Brown Invitational. Most recently, Komp was the team's top finisher at Farmingdale with a 139 (73-66) and was the tournament's medalist. He also finished among the top 25 at the Northeast Elite Invitational in the fall with back-to-back rounds of 73. Lindsay was the team's top golfer at Skidmore, finishing second with a two-round score of 136 with rounds of 67 and 69. He was also a team-best third at the Trinity/Hartford Invitational with a 76 in round one and 69 in round two for a two-day total of 145. Himmer posted back-to-back 13th-place finishes over the last two weeks with scores of 143 (Skidmore) and 144 (Farmingdale).
NYU will look to improve upon its fifth-place finish from a year ago as the Violets seek their first conference title since winning back-to-back in 2018 and 2019. This season, the team has finished among the top four teams in four tournaments, including a season-best third at Skidmore's Dr. Tim Brown Invitational. Jomyuth Luangtana-anan returns as a sophomore after a breakout rookie campaign (2024-25 Liberty League Rookie of the Year). He tied for 19th at the 2024 championship with a three-day score of 226 (78-72-76). This year, Luangtana-anan was the medalist at the Dr. Tim Brown Invitational after shooting -2 in round one (69) and -6 in round two (65) for a two-day total of 134 to win the tournament by two strokes. The tournament total of -8 is an NYU program record, the lowest-ever score over 36 holes. He also placed among the top 15 at Farmingdale's Glen Oaks Invitational (14th, 80) and George Cangero Invitational (12th, 144—70-74). Ryan Leung and Kevin Kim are also expected to perform well for NYU at this year's championship. Leung was the top golfer for the Violets a year ago, tying for 15th with a pair of 75s and a 74 to card 224 over three rounds, while Kim totaled a three-day score of 229 (76-75-78) to finish 23rd. Leung averages 75.9 strokes per round and posted a pair of top-20 showings this season. He was 15th at the George Cangero Invitational (145—75-70) and 17th at the Farmingdale Spring Invitational (145—72-73). Kim paced the team at the Farmingdale Spring Invitational, where he tied for 11th overall (143) with rounds of 69 and 73. He was second on the team at the Dr. Tim Brown Invitational in fifth place with a total score of 139 (69-70).
A trio of experienced golfers headlines the lineup for Clarkson heading into the 2025 Liberty League Championship. Ryan Makowski, Andrew Palmatier, and Eric Spoth are all back after finishing among the top 26 last season. Makowski led the way for the Golden Knights with a score of 226 (75-76-75), tying for 19th. Palmatier was not far behind with a score of 230 (77-74-79), tying for 24th. Spoth was 26th at 231 (76-76-79). Makowski won two events during the 2024-25 regular season, earning medalist honors at the St. Lawrence Fall Invitational and the Castleton Invitational. At St. Lawrence, he shot rounds of 72 and 71 for a two-day total of 143, and at Castleton, he recorded a pair of 73s for a two-round score of 146. Palmatier placed a team-best 28th at the Farmingdale Spring Invitational (147—72-75). His 2024-25 campaign was also highlighted by a fourth-place showing at the SUNY Canton Invitational, where he carded a 77. Spoth was the medalist at SUNY Canton with a one-round total of 67. He was the runner-up at Castleton (73-74) and the Oswego Fall Invitational (72-75) with two-round totals of 147 at both tournaments. First-year Tyler Yacawych will look to make an impact for the Golden Knights in his first conference championship. He posted a pair of top-10 finishes this year, placing 10th at the St. Lawrence Fall Invitational (153—74-79) and eighth at the Skidmore Fall Invitational (75).
Hobart will be led by juniors Charlie Craig and Jake Romney, who return for their third Liberty League Championship. They both finished among the top 35 last year, with Craig totaling a three-round score of 233 (29th, 78-78-77) and Romney carding a 239 (31st, 81-79-79). Craig is coming off a third-place showing at the Nazareth Spring Invitational on Monday, where he tallied an 80 in the one-round tournament. He was also the runner-up at the Oswego Fall Invitational with rounds of 73 and 74 for a total of 147. Romney was tops on the team at the Nazareth Fall Invitational, finishing third with a one-round score of 81. He also placed among the top 10 at the Oswego Fall Invitational (8th, 151) and Nazareth Spring Invitational (9th, 84).
