Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Vassar College Director of Athletics and Physical Education Michelle Walsh has announced that Carly Assimon has been tabbed to lead the Brewers' Women's Basketball program. Assimon, who brings a wealth of Division III coaching experience, takes over a Vassar program that has won the last two Liberty League Championships.
Said Walsh upon the announcement, "I am thrilled to announce that Carly Assimon will be joining the Vassar Athletics family as our new head coach for women's basketball. Throughout the interview process, Carly shared a clear vision for the program that supports student-athlete pursuit of excellence, both in the classroom and on the court. Carly's experience within the Liberty League will also help her to hit the ground running! I am excited for the future of the women's basketball team with Carly leading the way."
Assimon comes to Poughkeepsie after serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Rochester. While with the Yellow Jackets, Assimon was responsible for all recruiting efforts as well as fundraising and fall clinics.
On the court, Assimon assisted in individual skill development, practice planning, opponent scouting and film breakdown.
"I am truly honored to be named the next coach of the Vassar College women's basketball program. I want to thank Michelle Walsh, the search committee and the Vassar community for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity," commented Assimon.
Assimon continued, "Vassar women's basketball has built a proud tradition of success, both on the court and in the classroom, by developing student-athletes who excel as competitors, scholars and leaders. I look forward to building on that strong foundation, working alongside our student-athletes, alums and supporters to continue elevating this program and representing Vassar with pride."
Prior to Rochester, Assimon made stops at Cortland as an assistant coach for the 2024-25 season and Liberty League rival Clarkson the two seasons prior. The 2024-25 season saw Assimon help lead Cortland to an 18-8 record while assisting in the day-to-day operation of the program that included skill development, recruiting, academic monitoring and film breakdown.
While with the Golden Knights, Assimon was Clarkson's lead assistant before serving as the Interim Head Coach for seven contests. Assimon was again responsible for recruiting efforts, scouting, study hall and practice planning.
Also possessing AAU coaching experience, Assimon has led the Xgen 15U coach since 2024, developing players in preparation for college recruitment.
A four-year letter winner and team captain, Assimon earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Innovative Science and Entrepreneurship from Clarkson in 2021. Assismon went on to complete her Masters in Business Administration from Clarkson in 2023.
