The Liberty League has announced the major award winners for the 2021-22 women’s squash season. William Smith College junior Marce Marquez Martinez was a repeat selection as Liberty League Player of the Year. St Lawrence sophomore Anannya Morey and William Smith sophomore Laila Selim shared Rookie of the Year honors. St. Lawrence head coach Scott Denne received Coaching Staff of the Year honors after guiding the Saints to the league championship.
Player of the Year
Marce Marquez Martinez, Junior, Aguascalientes, Mexico
William Smith College junior Marce Marquez Martinez has been selected as both Liberty League Player and Rookie of the Year. Marquez Martinez, who was selected as both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year as a first-year athlete in 2020, went 12-7 overall while playing in both the number-one and number-two positions for the Herons. She was selected Liberty League Performer of the Week on Jan. 24 after recording wins at number-two against Denison and Mount Holyoke. Marquez Martinez, who went 2-0 in the Liberty League Championship, compiled a 7-6 record from the top position and a 4-0 record in the second spot. She qualified for the College Squash Association (CSA) National Collegiate Individual Squash Championships, participating in the Holleran Cup (B Division) East draw where she advanced to the quarterfinals.
Co-Rookie of the Year
Anannya Morey, St. Lawrence, Sophomore, Maharstra, India
St. Lawrence University sophomore Anannya Morey was selected as the Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Year. In her first season of collegiate competition, Morey quickly ascended to the number-one spot in the Saints lineup and remained there the entire season. She qualified for the College Squash Association (CSA) National Collegiate Individual Squash Championships, participating in the Holleran Cup (B Division) West draw. Morey was selected as Liberty League Performer of the Week on Nov. 15 and was also twice selected as Rookie of the Week. She went 2-0 in the Liberty League Championship, including a 3-1 win against William Smith that helped the Saints to a 6-3 team victory and the league title.

Co-Rookie of the Year: Laila Selim, William Smith, Sophomore, Cairo, Egypt
William Smith College sophomore Laila Selim shared Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Year honors. Selim was 13-5 during her rookie campaign, competing in the top two spots of the lineup including an 11-2 record in the No. 2 spot. Selim closed out her rookie campaign on a three-match winning streak, posting three victories in the No. 2 position at the CSA National Collegiate Women’s Team Championships. Her victories against Middlebury, Hamilton and Dickinson helped guide the sixth-seeded Herons to the Walker Cup (C Division) championship. Selim, who went 2-1 at the Liberty League Championship, was selected as the league’s Performer of the Week twice and Rookie of the Week once during her first season.
Coaching Staff of the Year
St. Lawrence University – Scott Denne, Head Coach
St. Lawrence University head coach Scott Denne and assistant coach Jamie Oakley have been selected as the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. Following a year in which the team did not compete due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Denne led the Saints to a 12-9 overall record and the Liberty League championship, sweeping the four-team round-robin tournament. St. Lawrence, which finished 22nd in the final College Squash Association national rankings, earned the fourth seed in the Walker Cup (Division C) at the CSA National Collegiate Team Championship. Additionally, Denne had two players – Anannya Morey and Sanna Koivumäki – qualify for the CSA National Collegiate Individual Championships.
