Vassar Women's Tennis beats St. Lawrence, Advances to Liberty League Championship

CANTON, NY - Powered by a strong effort in doubles and singles action, the Vassar College women's tennis team defeated St. Lawrence University by a 5-2 margin in the Liberty League Seminfinals on Thursday at Sammis Courts. With the win, the third-seeded Brewers move to 5-1 on the year and will play in the championship match at Skidmore College on Saturday. The second-seeded Saints conclude the 2021 campaign with a 6-3 mark.

The Brewers opened the match with senior Frances Cornwall and junior captain Melina Stavropoulos combining for an 8-2 win over SLU's Lillian Sullivan and Caroline Reilly in first doubles. Vassar made it a 2-0 margin from second doubles with rookie Sofie Shen and junior Cara Kizilbash besting Elena Styliades and Caitlyn Avery, 8-5.

The Saints concluded doubles action at three with their first point of the match as Meredith Macey and Gabriella Dadoly recorded an 8-5 win over juniors Sara Ehnstrom and Nicole Pihlstrom.

Heading into singles action, the Saints tied things at two-all as Avery defeated Pihlstrom by a 6-1, 6-0 margin from six. Stavropoulos pulled the Brewers back into the lead at two with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Sullivan. Next up at four, Kizilbash posted a 7-5, 6-0 win against Styliades, before Shen earned the match victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Rachel Caplan at three.

The Brewers will travel to Saratoga Springs on Saturday to face off against the Throughbreds at 1:30 p.m. in the 2021 Liberty League Championship match.
