Liberty League Tennis Championships set for May 1-3 -- LIVE SCORING

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Liberty League men's and women's tennis championships return to the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University as six men's teams and six women's teams will compete for Liberty League championships this Friday-Sunday, May 1-3. The top two teams for both men and women earn first-round byes. Two first-round matches will be held on Friday, May 1, two semifinals on Saturday, May 2, and the championship match on Sunday, May 3, for each gender. The championship teams receive the Liberty League's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT...

Men's Championship: RPI has won four straight Liberty League championships, but the Engineers enter the tournament as the sixth seed with a young team this season. Top-seeded Vassar (8-0 Liberty League; 15-5 overall) rolls into the league tournament having won 10 straight matches. The Brewers, currently ranked 27th in the ITA Division III rankings, are seeking their first Liberty League title since 2013. Vassar also won league titles in 2007 and 2010. Junior Eugene Lee enters the tournament with a 12-4 record at first singles. Seniors Fernando Bauermeister (10-5 at second singles) and Nolan Kubiak (8-2 at third singles) have also combined for a 10-6 record at first doubles. Second-seeded Skidmore (7-1 Liberty League; 14-5 overall) is currently the Liberty League's top-ranked team at No. 24 in the ITA Division III rankings. The Thoroughbreds dropped a 6-1 decision at Vassar on April 25. The Brewers won two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches. Ithaca enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed - its highest seed since joining the Liberty League. The Bombers are currently ranked 54th. Fifth-seeded Union is ranked 60th and fourth-seeded RIT is ranked 65th.

Women's Championship: Top-seeded Vassar will be seeking back-to-back championships after claiming last year's title. The Brewers, ranked 51st in the latest ITA Division III women's tennis rankings, finished unbeaten in Liberty League play at 8-0 (13-5 overall).  will be aiming for its 14th straight Liberty League title. Vassar's roster includes eight players back from last year's championship roster. Seniors Erin McCusker and Iris Li are the team's top two singles players and form the top doubles team for the Brewers. RPI (7-1 Liberty League; 10-6 overall), finished the season with seven wins in the team's last eight matches, with the only loss coming against Vassar, 5-2. That match included a three-set singles match along with three other matches that had a tiebreaker set. Third-seeded St. Lawrence (6-2 Liberty League; 13-4 overall) fell to both Vassar and RPI in competitive matches.
