Vassar captures first Liberty League Women's Tennis Title since 2010 with 4-1 victory over Skidmore

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Vassar College women's tennis team posted a 4-1 victory over top-seeded Skidmore Sunday morning to win the program's first Liberty League crown since 2010. The title is Vassar's ninth overall and stops a 13-year run of championships for Skidmore. After dropping her first set, junior Iris Li clinched the victory in a third-set tie breaker on her way to being named the event's Most Outstanding Performer.
 
Sunday's win is Vassar's sixth straight and improves the Brewers to 14-5 overall. Skidmore falls to 10-10.
 
Doubles
  • Skidmore got off to a quick start, claiming the doubles point with victories at the first and second positions. The Skidmore first doubles team of seniors Konika Dhull and Grace Truong won 6-1 at first doubles and the team of senior Ella Provost and Mia Sarzynska clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at second doubles.
  • Vassar's third pair of Maddie Kirby and Elyse Duley improved to 10-3 on the season following a 6-0 blanking of their opponents at the third position.
 
Singles
  • The Brewers rallied to sweep all four singles matches that completed.
  • Li outlasted Skidmore's Grace Truong in a third-set tie breaker to clinch the title for the Brewers. Li scored a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory for the Brewers, moving to 14-2 on the season and in the process earning Most Outstanding Performer honors.
  • Macey Dowd evened the match at 1-1 with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win at the third position, moving her singles record to 11-6 on the season.
  • Ananya Krishnan moved Vassar in front 2-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 fifth singles win, her ninth triumph of the season in 12 decisions.
  • Kirby brought the Brewers to within a match of the title with a 6-4, 6-3 sixth singles victory for Vassar.
  • Li followed at second singles to close out the match.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar will learn its first round opponent in the NCAA Tournament on Monday at noon.
