Liberty League Squash Championships set for February 8-9 at St. Lawrence

The 2025 Liberty League Men's and Women's Squash Championships will take place this weekend as St. Lawrence University will host the championship at the Robie Squash Center, Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 8-9, in Canton, N.Y.
 
The Liberty League men's championship consists of seven teams with a seeded tournament bracket. The top seed receives a bye. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be played on Saturday followed by the championship round matches (1st, 3rd, 5th) on Sunday.

The women's championship consists of six teams divided into two 3-team pools. Each team will play the other two teams in its pool on Saturday with championship round matches (1st, 3rd, 5th) to be played on Sunday. All tournament matches will be played utilizing the 3-court system.

2024 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAPS...
 
WOMEN: The 14th-ranked William Smith squash team won its second straight and fifth overall Liberty League Championship as the Herons defeated No. 25 St. Lawrence 7-2 in the championship match. William Smith has won three of the last four Liberty League titles. Senior Laila Selim was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer, posting a 2-0 record on the weekend. She won both of her matches in 3-0 sweeps.

William Smith picked up the victory, winning five of its seven points in 3-0 sweeps. The Herons won the other two in four games. Senior Rafaela Albuja Sanchez beat Anannya Morey, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5, in the No. 1 spot. It was Albuja Sanchez's 11th straight victory. She is 12-2 overall this season playing all 14 matches at No. 1.

Selim won 11-6, 11-2, 11-8 at No. 2. She beat Ulrikke Bore Ribesen for her third straight win. Sophomore Nathalie Sim defeated Margaret Fleischner in the No. 3 spot. She lost only three points, picking up an 11-3, 11-3, 11-0 win. Sim is 10-2 this season playing all 12 matches at No. 3.

In the No. 4 spot junior Anna O'Connor swept Madeleine Martin, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8. Senior Lark Ervasti also collected a 3-0 sweep in the No. 7 spot. She cruised past Ksenia Merkulova, 11-5, 11-4, 11-0. She is 8-3 this season. Sophomore Jess Finnerty secured the Liberty League title for the Herons with her win in the No. 8 spot. She defeated Xitlali Zuniga, 11-0, 7-11, 12-10, 11-2. The win was Finnerty's ninth of the season.
 
MEN: The University of Rochester earned its fifth straight and 11th overall Liberty League title, downing host St. Lawrence University 7-2.

Rochester jumped out to a big lead early and clinched the match without much opposition through the opening five points. Four of those five wins came by 3-0 sweeps, with junior Arnav Mandhana posting the championship clinching point at number seven for the Yellowjackets.

Rochester's opening wave featured the two team captains, juniors Omar Zakaria and Tom Whiteley earning sweeps for the first two points. Zakaria won 11-3, 11-3 and 11-4 at number three over Harrison Callaway, with Whiteley following suit with an 11-8, 11-9 and 11-4 win over Vladimir Iglesias at the six spot.

Senior Emilio Carrillo put the Yellowjackets up 3-0 on the team scoreboard following his four-game win over Jack Turvey at the nine slot in the order. To start wave two, senior Luis Moncada kept things rolling with a sweep of Oliver Bikhazi-Green at position four, earning an 11-7, 11-5, 11-4 win. As Moncada was earning his win, Mandhana was in the process of his three-game win over Hassar Madkour in what proved to be the clinching match.
 
A look at the WOMEN'S TEAMS...
 
Bard Raptors (3-5):
  • CSA National Ranking: 31st
  • With three wins on the season, Bard has its most wins since the 2019-20 season when the Raptors won four matches. The team has picked up wins against Fordham, Smith and Vassar.
  • The Raptors have players with multiple wins throughout their lineup. First-year player Tarana Downer has played in the No. 1 position in every match this season and owns a pair of wins.
  • Senior Meherin Hossain, junior Tee Williams and junior Mona Haidari lead the team with three wins apiece.
Denison Big Red (9-5):
  • CSA National Ranking: 24th
  • Denison joined the Liberty League as a squash member in 2023 and will be one of the top contenders for the championship this year.
  • First-year player Charlotte Jones, who plays in the No. 1 position for the Big Red, is one of the Liberty League's top newcomers.
  • Three of the team's top four players are newcomers. In addition to Jones, Helena Fournaris and Amelia Keng are first-year players at the top of the Denison ladder. Senior Antoinette Ramsey, currently at No. 2, is the team's most experienced player.
Haverford Fords (4-7):
  • CSA National Ranking: 26th
  • Haverford made its Liberty League championship debut last season and finished fourth in the seven-team tournament. The Fords have played four matches against Liberty League teams this season, going 3-1.
  • Senior Ariana Solecki and sophomore Joelle Phuah have split time at the top two spots for Haverford with each winning a pair of matches at No. 1.
  • First-year player Ofri Geva, the Liberty League rookie of the week this past week, has recorded a team-best five wins while competing in the No. 7 position.
St. Lawrence Saints (2-4):
  • CSA National Ranking: 27th
  • Since the Liberty League women's squash championship was restarted in 2017-18, St. Lawrence has won three of the six titles, and four overall in the 13 years in which it has been contested.
  • The Saints opened the season in January with wins over William Smith and Brown.
  • Following the graduation of six seniors last year, St. Lawrence has just one senior this season in Meg Pruitt, who picked up a victory in the No. 3 position in her last match against Dickinson. Junior Madeleine Martin and first-year Mariam Dodd occupy the top two spots for the Saints.
Vassar Brewers (2-11):
  • CSA National Ranking: 29th
  • Vassar owns wins over Fordham and Smith this season. The Brewers have played a total of four matches against Liberty League teams this season – Bard, Haverford (twice) and William Smith.
  • Junior Adriana Ordaya, first-year Charlotte Tobin and junior Sarah Boucher-Rowe occupy the top three spots for the Brewers.
  • Ordaya has been selected as Liberty League Performer of the Week twice while Tobin has earned three selections as Rookie of the Week.
William Smith Herons (1-11):
  • CSA National Ranking: 30th
  • William Smith has won five Liberty League titles, most in league history. The Herons defeated St. Lawrence to win the title last season.
  • Sophomore Brianna Lucero and junior Tamia Rollaing are the only two returning players from last year's team. William Smith has seven first-year players.
  • First-year player Reshika Rajarathinam has occupied the top spot all season for the Herons and leads the team with three wins.
A look at the MEN'S TEAMS…
 
Bard Raptors (1-8):
  • CSA National Ranking: 34th
  • Bard junior Artemy Mukhin, the 2022-23 Liberty League Rookie of the Year, is currently 9-0 on the season with all of his matches coming at the No. 1 position. Mukhin has faced one Liberty League opponent this season, recording a win against Vassar.
  • The Raptors own a win against Swarthmore. Each side won three matches with the Raptors earning the tiebreaker based on total games won, 10 to 9.
Denison Big Red (4-8):
  • CSA National Ranking: 29th
  • Now in its third season competing as a Liberty League squash member, Denison finished fourth of seven teams at last year's championship. The Big Red have been very competitive this season, despite a 4-8 record as four of the team's losses have come by 5-4 scores.
  • Junior Juan Felipe Hernandez occupies the No. 1 position for Denison. He earned a five-game win against Chatham in his last match.
  • Denison has faced one Liberty League opponent this season, earning an 8-1 win over Hobart on Nov. 9.
Haverford Fords (4-8):
  • CSA National Ranking: 27th
  • Haverford made its Liberty League squash championship debut last season, finishing fifth in the seven-team field. The Fords have played four matches against Liberty League teams this season, going 2-2.
  • Senior Noah Tunis plays at the No. 1 position for the Fords, picking up a pair of victories in two matches against Vassar.
  • A pair of sophomores, Francis Betkowski and Arvin Krishnan, currently lead Haverford with six wins apiece.
Hobart Statesmen (3-11):
  • CSA National Ranking: 32nd
  • Hobart has won two of its last three matches, defeating Liberty League foes Haverford and Vassar in a tri-match at Haverford.
  • First-year player Toby Clegg-Petri has been a standout for the Statesmen, compiling a combined 7-6 record between the No. 1 (4-4) and No. 2 (3-2) positions.
  • Senior Joseph Raskin Lantos currently leads the Statesmen with an 8-5 record while playing in the upper part of the Hobart ladder.
Rochester Yellowjackets (6-6):
  • CSA National Ranking: 16th
  • Rochester is currently the Liberty League's top-ranked team. The Yellowjackets enter the Liberty League tournament having won three straight matches and four of their last five.
  • Rochester has won 11 Liberty League championships all time, including five straight.
  • Rochester's experienced roster includes eight seniors among its 14 players. Senior Yash Fadte anchors the Yellowjackets lineup from the No. 1 position. Fadte is currently 8-2 on the season with his only losses coming to opponents from top-ranked Penn and eighth-ranked Columbia.
  • Senior Omar Zakaria, 6-5 at No. 2, and sophomore Dhirren Rajarathinam, 5-5 at No. 3, provide the Yellowjackets with a strong top third of the lineup. Rajarathinam earned Liberty League Rookie of the Year honors as a first-year player at Hobart last season.
St. Lawrence Saints (5-5):
  • CSA National Ranking: 23rd
  • St. Lawrence has won seven Liberty League men's squash championships all-time – second-most behind Rochester – including five straight from 2014 to 2018.
  • After dropping four matches against competitive teams to open the season, the Saints have won five of their last six matches to even their record at 5-5.
  • Senior Lewis Anderson, a three-time All-Liberty League selection and two-time Player of the Year (2021-22 and 2023-24), is St. Lawrence's top player and currently 4-2 on the season.
Vassar Brewers (5-9):
  • CSA National Ranking: 33rd
  • Vassar owns wins over Boston University, Northeastern, Siena, Bard and Colgate this season. The Brewers have faced four Liberty League opponents this season – Bard, Haverford (twice) and Hobart.
  • Sophomore Konstantinos Georgallides earned Liberty League Performer of the Week honors during the opening weekend of the season after going 3-0 from the No. 1 position against Fordham, BU and Northeastern.
  • Senior Jared Haslinger and junior Kyle Benson fill the top third of the ladder behind Georgallides in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
