The Liberty League has announced the major award winners for the 2022-23 men’s squash season. University of Rochester sophomore Yash Fadte was selected as the Player of the Year. Bard College first-year player Artemy Mukhun was chosen as Rookie of the Year. The Rochester coaching staff, led by head coach Mario Yanez Tapia, was recognized as the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.
Player of the Year
Yash Fadte, University of Rochester, Sophomore, Vasco Da Gama, India
After earning Rookie of the Year honors last season, University of Rochester sophomore Yash Fadte was selected as Liberty League Player of the Year. Fadte earned All-America honors after qualifying for the Pool Draw (top flight) at the College Squash Association (CSA) National Collegiate Individual Championships – the only Liberty League player selected to the top flight. Fadte, who finished with a 16-8 overall record, including 15-4 in dual matches, was named Most Outstanding Player at the Liberty League Championship, earning the title-clinching point at the number-two position in the team’s 5-4 victory over St. Lawrence. He recorded wins at number-one in all three of Rochester’s matches in the CSA Hoehn Cup. He also earned wins in matches against top-ten teams Cornell, Princeton, Drexel, Columbia and Yale.
Rookie of the Year
Artemy Mukhin, Bard College, First Year, New York, N.Y.
Bard College first-year player Artemy Mukhin was selected as the Liberty League Rookie of the Year after a strong first season.
Mukhin compiled an 8-3 record – all at the top position. At the Liberty League Championship, he went 2-1, recording wins over St. Lawrence and Vassar. Mukhin earned Liberty League Performer of the Week honors once and Rookie of the Week accolades twice during his rookie season.
Coaching Staff of the Year
University of Rochester – Mario Yanez Tapia, Head Coach
University of Rochester head coach Mario Yanez Tapia and volunteer assistant coach Jesse Cramer have been selected as the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. Yanez led the Yellowjackets to their fourth straight Liberty League title, going 3-0 at the league championship, including a 5-4 win over St. Lawrence in the championship match. The Yellowjackets were the Liberty League's highest-ranked team, finishing 15th in the national poll. At the CSA National Championships, Rochester participated in the Hoehn Cup (B Division), going 1-2, which included a pair of 5-4 losses. At the CSA National Collegiate Individual Championships, Yanez coached Abdelrahman Lasheen to the Molloy (B Division) West championship with a perfect 4-0, earning All-American honors in the process.
