POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The NCAA announced the Division III Men's Basketball Championship field on Monday afternoon and the Vassar College Men's Basketball team will head south to Frederick, Maryland to take on the host Hood College Blazers on Friday, March 6th, in a four-team pod that includes the University of Redlands and Susquehanna University. Game time with the Blazers has been set for 5:35 p.m.
Vassar (20-8, 13-5 Liberty League) earned its second Liberty League title in program history on Sunday afternoon with a 57-53 win over top-seeded RPI. The Brewers reached the 20-win plateau for the first time in school history. The Brewers rank 14th in the country in opponent field goal percentage at 38.8-percent, 17th in the nation in rebounding at 42.6 per game, fourth nationally in three-point defense at 27.6-percent.
Vassar is led by conference tournament Most Outstanding Performer and junior Shea Fitzgerald, who leads the team in scoring with 16.6 points per game and has recorded career-highs in three-pointers made (79), rebounds (5.1 per game), assists (80) and free-throw percentage (88.4-percent). Sophomore Parker Neuenhaus is second on the team in points with 14.3 per game and second in rebounding with 6.2 per contest. Neuenhaus is also fourth on the squad in blocks with 23 and is shooting 51.5-percent from the field.
Hood, currently ranked 17th in the most recent D3Hoops.com poll, finished the season 24-3 overall and 13-1 in the MAC Commonwealth and defeated York (PA) in double overtime in the conference title game. The Blazers rank fourth in the country in scoring offense at 95.7 points per game and are fifth in the country in three-pointers made per contest at 11.9.
Jevon Yarbrough, Tournament MVP, is tied for seventh in the country in points per game with 25.6 and is shooting 53.9-percent from the field, 40.7-percent from the three-point line and 88.7-percent from the free throw line. Kellen Robinson (16.6), Garrett Cox (12.7), Jude Huseby (12.3) and Karron Mallory (10.9) are all averaging double-digit points this season.
