MEDFORD, Mass. – The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) men's lacrosse team fell to Tufts, losing 15-11 in the NCAA Division III Tournament Semifinals on Sunday.
RIT junior Seth Grottenhaler scored three goals and senior TJ Hendricks tallied two in the defeat. Seniors John Mozrall and Luke Pilcher each recorded a goal and an assist.
Graduate student goalie Will Sterrett made 15 saves and classmate Taylor Jensen scooped up eight ground balls and caused two turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grottenthaler scored with 13:06 to play in the first quarter to give the Tigers the early 1-0 lead.
- Tommy Swank and Jack Reginery scored back-to-back goals for Tufts, taking the 2-1 advatnage on Reginery's goal with 9:38 remaining in the frame.
- Hendricks scored on a pass from sophomore Sam Bennett that tied the score at 2-2 with 6:28 to play.
- Jack Boyden gave the Jumbos a 3-2 lead on his goal with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter.
- Senior Sean Traynor scored in transition with 4:14 to play, which knotted the game at 3-3.
- Kevin Christmas scored with 2:41 remaining to give Tufts a 4-3 lead and junior Caleb Commandant scored with 2:25 to play in the quarter to again tie the score (4-4).
- Tufts outscored RIT 4-0 in the second quarter, extending its lead to 8-4 through the first half.
- Swank scored two straight goals to begin the third quarter to give the Jumbos a six-goal lead, 10-4.
- Pilcher scored with 8:16 remaining in the third to cut the Jumbos' lead to five (10-5).
- Boyden scored for the Jumbos with 7:51 to play to make it 11-5.
- Grottenthaler scored his second of the game with 6:26 to play to cut the deficit to five once again, 11-6.
- Swank and Christmas tallied back-to-back goals for the seven-goal advantage, 13-6, with 4:20 to play in the third.
- Grottenthaler and senior Zeb Hollinger netted back-to-back goals late in the third to trim Tufts lead to five, 13-8.
- Ethan O'Neill scored with 9:31 to play in the fourth (14-8).
- Hendricks and senior Spencer Bell each scored a goas, cutting the Tufts lead to four, 14-10. Bell's goal was with 1:44 to play.
- Boyden scored with 37 seconds remaining to make it 15-10, and Mozrall scored with 10-seconds remaining to make it a 15-11 final.

- Tufts outshot RIT 61-39
- The Tigers went 26-of-33 on clears and had 31 ground balls.
- RIT had its 12-game NCAA Tournament winning streak snapped.
