Women's Track and Field

25th ANNIVERSARY SPOTLIGHT: Kylee Bartlett, University of Rochester, Women's Track & Field (2015-2019)

The Liberty League is celebrating its 25th anniversary during the 2019-2020 academic year. Originally founded as the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) in 1995, the conference was renamed the Liberty League during the summer of 2004. Each Thursday throughout the year, the Liberty League will be celebrating its silver anniversary by recognizing outstanding teams and individuals from its rich 25-year history.

As the teams prepare to compete at the 2020 Liberty League Indoor Track and Field Championships this Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28-29, the league recognizes University of Rochester standout Kylee Bartlett, one of the top multi-event track and field athletes in the league’s 25-year history.

During her time at Rochester, Bartlett was a three-time national champion and five-time All-American. She also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-America honors in each of the three years she was eligible (first-year student-athletes are not eligible for the award).

Bartlett excelled as a multi-event athlete, winning the NCAA Division III championship in the outdoor heptathlon (consists of 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin and 800-meter run) as both a sophomore and junior while winning the indoor pentathlon (60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800-meter run) as a sophomore in 2017. She also earned a runner-up finish in the pentathlon in 2019 and a fourth-place finish in 2018.

Bartlett competed at the Liberty League championships as both a junior and senior when Rochester joined the league for track and field beginning in 2017-18. She is the current championship indoor record-holder in the 60-meter hurdles (8.86) and outdoor championship record-holder in the pentathlon (4,890). She also owns Liberty League all-time (association) records for the 60-meter hurdles (8.80), pentathlon (3,698) and heptathlon (4,890).

After a strong first season in which she qualified for the NCAA indoor pentathlon (finishing 16th), Bartlett made a major leap as a sophomore when she was the top NCAA qualifier in the event. She set a school record with 3,528 points in capturing the pentathlon at the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Her breakout campaign continued into the spring where she became the third-ever athlete from the University of Rochester to win two national championships, placing first in the heptathlon with a school-record 5,020 points at the NCAA outdoor championship.

As a junior, Bartlett continued to get better as she improved her school record in the pentathlon, scoring 3,553 points, placing fourth at the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. She ended the season ranked third in NCAA Division III in the pentathlon. Bartlett climbed back atop the podium in the spring, winning the heptathlon title at the NCAA outdoor championship with 4,716 points. In earning All-America honors for the fourth time in her career, she became only the fifth Division III woman to earn multiple heptathlon titles. Following her junior season, Bartlett was named the Liberty League Outdoor Field Performer of the Year after earning All-Liberty League first-team honors in the 100 meter hurdles and heptathlon by virtue of event wins at the league championship.

Bartlett’s 2019 indoor season was filled with record-setting performances. She earned a runner-up finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, accumulating a school and Liberty League record 3,698 points. Her score was the fifth-best ever in Division III track and field, resulting in a fifth career All-American honor. Bartlett was named the Liberty League Field Athlete of the Year and Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA. She broke another school record, coming in the 60 meter hurdles, clocking in 8.80 seconds at the NCAA Championships. Her performance at the 2019 Liberty League Indoor Championship was one of her best. While she did not participate in the pentathlon, she earned personal-best marks in three events - 200 meters (26.85 seconds), long jump (5.61 meters) and shot put (11.86 meters).

While her 2019 outdoor season ended prematurely due to injury, Bartlett was selected as an Academic All-American in Division III women's track and field for the third time by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. She was honored as a Lysle “Spike” Garnish Scholar-Athlete, an award that recognizes the top 10 senior student-athletes at Rochester. She was also selected as the winner of Rochester’s Merle Spurrier Award, which is presented to the female student-athlete who makes the most outstanding contribution to women's sports. The Rochester Press-Radio Club also selected Bartlett as a two-time recipient of the Jerry Flynn Award as the Rochester Area College Female Athlete of the Year.
