2018 Liberty League Women's Golf Championship Results

CANTON, N.Y. – New York University closed out the first round of the 2018 Liberty League Women’s Golf Championship 11 strokes ahead of second-place Ithaca College at Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course on Saturday, totaling 297 on the day. That final score would be enough for the Violets to clinch their fourth straight championship as the final round of the weekend scheduled for Sunday was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Violets earn their fourth straight Liberty League title and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship, which will be held May 8-11 at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. The NCAA championship field will be announced on Monday, April 30.

NYU shot a nine-over par 297 finishing ahead of second place Ithaca’s 308 in the eight team tournament. All five of NYU’s golfers finished among the top-ten, including three in the top-five. Wellesley College finished third (317) and was followed by Vassar College (318), Union College (333), Mount Holyoke College (338), St. Lawrence University (354) and William Smith College (362).

Alyssa Poentis was NYU’s leader, carding a 72, and placing second individually in the championship. Patty Treevichaphan was only one stroke behind with 73 for third while Jenni Bluetling rounded out the top-four with 74. Teammates Navika Kuchakulla and Arisa Kimura tied for ninth as both scored 78.

Ithaca senior Indiana Jones earned medalist honors at the championship as she finished ahead of Poentis by one-stroke for a one-round total of 71. The top five finishers at the championship were recognized as All-Liberty League first team honorees. Jones is joined by Poentis, Treevichphan, Bluetling and Mount Holyoke’s Stephanie Spitzer (5th, 75) on the first team.

Golfers finishing sixth through tenth received All-Liberty League second-team recognition. Ithaca’s Kyra Denish and Vassar’s Andrea Han each shot 76 to tie for sixth. Wellesley’s Li Rosey (77) was eighth and there was a four-way tie for ninth. Kuchakulla, Kimura, Wellesley’s Ryan MacVicar and St. Lawrence’s Hailey Wilson produced matching scores of 78.
