Liberty League announces 2017-18 Men's Squash Award Recipients
The Liberty League has announced the major award winners for the 2017-18 men's squash season. St. Lawrence University senior Ahmed Bayoumy was selected as the Player of the Year. University of Rochester freshman Marcus Sim was chosen as Rookie of the Year. The St. Lawrence coaching staff, led by head coach Chris Abplanalp, was recognized as the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.
Player of the Year
Ahmed Bayoumy, St. Lawrence, Sr., Cairo, Egypt
St. Lawrence University senior Ahmed Bayoumy has been selected as the Liberty League Player of the Year in men's squash. Bayoumy played the entire season at No. 1 for the Saints, finishing with a 13-7 overall record. He was the highest nationally ranked individual among Liberty League players, ranking eighth. Bayoumy, a four-time All-Liberty League selection, competed in the Pool Trophy draw at CSA Individual National Championships and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Rookie of the Year
Marcus Sim, Rochester, Fr., Kuching, Malaysia
University of Rochester first-year performer Marcus Sim was chosen as the Liberty League Rookie of the Year. Sim, who earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors on three occasions and performer of the week honors once, finished the season with a 12-5 overall record, which was tied for the best mark of the team. He played from No. 3 through No. 6 on Rochester's ladder and compiled a 3-0 record against nationally ranked opponents.
Coaching Staff of the Year
St. Lawrence University – Chris Abplanalp, Head Coach
St. Lawrence University head coach Chris Abplanalp and assistant coach Owen Butler have been selected as the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. Abplanalp led the Saints to a 14-5 overall record including a fifth straight Liberty League title. St. Lawrence finished fourth in the Potter Cup (A Division) at the College Squash Association (CSA) National Championship after earning a 9-0 victory over fifth-seeded Dartmouth to open the tournament. It marked the team's fourth straight top-four finish at the national tournament.
