Liberty League announces 2012 women's cross country award recipients

2012 Liberty League Women’s Cross Country Awards

Runner of the Year: Amy Cymerman, Jr., St. Lawrence University

A consistent top finisher for St. Lawrence early in the season, junior runner Amy Cymerman was a unanimous selection for Liberty League Runner of the Year after winning both the Liberty League Championship and the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship. At the Liberty League race, Cymerman led all runners by a four-second margin with a time of 21:43. She bested that time on the Regional course, clocking in at 21:37.5, 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.  A three-time performer of the week honoree in 2012, Cymerman was also named Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Rookie of the Year: Ella Martin, Fr., St. Lawrence University

Ella Martin was a unanimous selection for Liberty League Rookie of the Year after finishing her freshman campaign with the top league finish at the NCAA Championship race, where she placed 39th and posted the best finish in program history for the Saints.  A six-time Liberty League rookie of the week in 2012, Martin was also named the NYSCTC Rookie of the Year. She posted five top-five finishes, including a win at St. Lawrence’s own invitational meet.  She was also the first Division III finisher at the University of Rochester Invitational in September, placing 10th.

Coaching Staff of the Year: Mike Howard, Head Coach; Kate Curran, Assistant Coach; St. Lawrence University

St. Lawrence University Head Coach Mike Howard and Assistant Kate Curran were named the coaching staff of the year after leading the Saints to their 11th consecutive Liberty League Championship, fifth consecutive NYSCTC Championship and fourth consecutive NCAA Atlantic Regional title. Howard was also named NYSCTC Coach of the Year and Atlantic Regional Women’s Coach of the Year in 2012.
