KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Julian Schott (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) earned the first National All-America recognition of his career on Friday, finishing sixth in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 56.03 at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Allen Jones Aquatic Center. He becomes the first RPI swimmer since Meghan Hartman ’04 to finish top eight at Nationals and earn All-America honors.

Schott had an outstanding day during today’s prelims and finals as he participates in his first NCAA Meet. He posted a time of 55.90 in the morning qualifying to place third overall. His time not only shattered his old record of 56.72 set in February, but also became a new UNYSCSA Association record.

Winning today’s 100-breast event was junior Rory Buck from Whitworth, who swam to a time of 54.30 for this year’s National title. Schott was vying to become the first RPI swimmer to win a National title since Hartman won the 200-breaststroke at the 2004 NCAA Meet.

One of the Engineers most dominant swimmers during the 2010-11 season, Schott secured his spot at the 2011 Nationals after having an outstanding effort at the UNYSCSA Championships in late February where he posted five school records and achieved three NCAA B Cuts. Additionally, he finished no less than fifth in any of the seven events he competed. Among his top performances were wins in the 100-breast (56.72), the 200-breast (2:05.92) and the 400-Medley Relay (3:25.46). All three of his victories shattered existing school records and were B Cut times.

During the regular season, Schott posted 23 victories in 40 races. In addition to finishing third or better in 34 races, he placed no less than seventh in any event. Schott had at least one win through nine meets, including eight with two or more victories.

In his career, Schott won six Liberty League titles with five victories coming at this year’s meet. He also helped the Engineers to the conference title this season which was the squad’s fourth in the last seven years.

Schott, who participated in the 50-freestyle at Nationals on Wednesday, remains in the hunt for his second All-America of the 2011 meet as he will compete in the 200-breast on Saturday. Preliminaries begin at 10:30am with the event finals for the top 16 beginning at 6:30pm.
