University of Rochester senior Madeline O’Connell was a two-time national champion and added a third All-America honor at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend. O'Connell claimed titles in the pole vault and on UR’s 4x400 meter relay. Additionally, the senior finished fourth in 400 meters, breaking the school record in that event. O’Connell’s weekend started off with a pole vault national title, her first career individual NCAA crown, clearing 3.92 meters. Later in the weekend, O’Connell led off UR’s second straight national title relay squad with a 55.80 second split time, ranking as the best leadoff leg in the field, helping UR post and overall time of 3:45.21 in the winning performance. That relay time is fourth best all-time in Division III history. O’Connell also ran a time of 55.42 seconds in the 400 meter finals, breaking the school record while finishing fourth. Her efforts towards the team scoring total helped Rochester score 32 overall points, fourth best among the 66 teams that recorded a point in the meet, ranking as UR’s second best finish ever in track & field history at the NCAA meet.
