In the season-opening Smith Winter Classic, RPI junior Luke Lyons won the two events in which he was entered. He beat two others in the 400 meters with a time of 50.39 (second-place finisher ran 52.09) and he was the opener on the victorious 400 relay team, running a 49.5 split to help the squad to a 3:32.88. They were nearly two seconds in front of the runner-up team's 3:34.25. Lyons' time was the eighth-best among Division III competitors in the 400 on the season-opening weekend.
