In the Upstate Classic on Saturday, a meet that featured 11 schools, RPI first-year athlete George Gonatas competed in three events and finished in the top five in each. He won the 20-person shot put with a throw of 14.24, which was just ahead of the runner-up (13.99). He was second in the 24-person discus with a maximum effort of 39.18 meters, just behind the winner's 40.90, and fifth in the 14-person hammer with a throw of 44.81 meters. Rensselaer won the meet with 314 points, 202 ahead of second place Oneonta (112).
