Vassar College junior defender Lauren Shumate was stellar defensively in a 3-1 victory over No. 5 William Smith College on Saturday. She helped hold one of the nation's top offenses to just one goal. Shumate, who plays sweeper for Vassar, was there to deny many entry opportunities for the Herons as the Brewers handed William Smith its first loss of the season. Also in the win, Shumate scored her second goal of the season to put VC up 1-0.
