RIT senior Matt Giannino competed in two events at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 1,500 meter run on Thursday, May 21 and 5,000 meters on Saturday, May 23 at St. Lawrence University. He finished 16th overall in the 1,500 and 12th in the 5,000 meters. Giannino placed ninth in his heat of the 1,500 meters and 16th overall on Thursday and did not qualify for the final, finishing with a time of 3:55.99. He was just over a second shy of qualifying, as the second through 16th place runners were separated by just 1.19 seconds. In his heat, Giannino sat fourth through the first 800-meters before shuffling back to last at the start of the final lap. He tried to unleash his stong late kick, but just could not make up enough ground on the leaders. Charlie Marquardt of Haverford College won the heat in a time of 3:53.40.
On Saturday, Giannino finished 12th out of 20 runners in the 5,000 meters, recording a time of 14:53.78. Josh Thorson of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the race by just under five seconds in a course record time of 14:10.29. Giannino went right to the front of the field and led for the first 2,000 meters before falling back slightly. He tried to mount a rally, but was unable to maintain his early pace.
