The Hobart varsity eight won the collegiate eight gold medal at the Head of the Genesee on Saturday. It's the first time the Statesmen have won gold in the event since 2002 when it was known as the Stonehurst Invitational. 
The crew of Dylan Brodie, W. Hunter Holtz, August Wherry, Brett Lawhon, Nicholas Baca, Coty Burgess, Rob Nanovsky, Robert McNamara, and Sarah Tanzer finished the head race in 15:57.80, 15.7 seconds faster than runner-up Bucknell and 17.4 seconds clear of third place Rochester. In the afternoon sprint, Hobart's top crew squared off with Bucknell's No. 1 boat. The Head of the Genesee's defending champion crossed the line 0.3 seconds ahead of the Statesmen (4:37.7 to 4:38.0), but the Hobart claimed the gold medal with an insurmountable lead from its morning run.
