A new Liberty League champion will be crowned in women’s basketball as Clarkson and RIT play on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y. in the 2015-16 championship game. Neither have captured a team title in the history of the league.

How Clarkson and RIT reached the championship…
The top two seeds of the 2015-16 Liberty League tournament advanced as top-seeded Clarkson beat No. 4 St. Lawrence, 63-54 and No. 2 RIT defeated No. 3 Union by four points, 68-64. The Golden Knights have won 16 of their last 17 games including Wednesday’s semifinal. Clarkson junior Alysia Marsal and senior Ashley Loggins each posted a double-double in Wednesday’s victory, combining for 29 points and 21 rebounds. At halftime, St. Lawrence was ahead 29-22 and at the start of the second half were ahead by eight before the Golden Knights went on a nine-point run to take their first lead of the night. St. Lawrence would tie the game up three more times but could never regain the lead, thanks to 23 third quarter points from Clarkson. Junior Devin Sorell also chipped in 16 points along with a team-high four three-pointers.

With the win on Wednesday, RIT recorded its first 20-win season in the history of the program. The Tigers were led by sophomore Jessica Glaz, who scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting. RIT took the 39-31 lead into halftime after trailing in the first half. Union made the game interesting coming within one point on a three-pointer and even tying it with 3:13 remaining in regulation. Freshman Cori Akada and sophomore Amanda Olsen also made offensive contributions with 12 and 8 points, respectively.

Earlier this season…

The Golden Knights leads the season series, 2-0 as they won both regular season meetings with the Tigers by scores of 74-65 in January and 63-51 in mid-February. In January in Potsdam, Loggins paced Clarkson with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers didn’t give up despite trailing for the first half of the game, 32-23. RIT took its first lead of the game in the fourth quarter with a little over six minute remaining, leading 62-58 until Clarkson took over with a 16-3 run to close out the game. Okada had a team-high 18 points for the Tigers while freshman Tara Lynch (16) and Glaz also produced points in double figures.  For Clarkson, Sorell (14), Stephanie Grobe (15) and Madison Shea (14) were also key to the Golden Knights’ offense.

The two teams last met two weeks ago in Rochester. It was once again a team effort for Clarkson as Loggins (18 points), Grobe (15 points), Sorell (17 points), trailing only 27-25 at halftime. In the final 10 minutes of the third quarter, the Golden Knights went on an eight-point run to go up 45-38 and they added to it in the fourth quarter, leading by 14 with six minutes left to play. RIT came within seven (55-48) but it was not enough as the Golden Knights came out on top. The Tigers were led by Lynch (14 points) and senior Maria Edwards (11 points).

Tournament Preview

With a 20-5 record and a 13-3 mark in league play, Clarkson is making its second straight appearance in the Liberty League tournament. Senior Ashley Loggins leads the team, ranked second in the league in scoring (16.9 points per game) and rebounding (10.8 rebounds per game). She also set a program record for steals in a season with 105, averaging 4.2 per game, which ranks her among national leaders. Sophomore Devin Sorell and junior Stephanie Grobe are also key players for Clarkson. Sorell leads the league with 61 three-pointers and she is averaging 15.2 points per game. Grobe is averaging 9.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Sophomore Madison Shea is also an impact player for the Golden Knights (8.8 PPG, 3.7 RPG). Clarkson hosts St. Lawrence on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the local rivals just met up a week ago with the Saints coming out on top and snapping Clarkson’s 15-game win streak. St. Lawrence finished the season with a 16-9 overall record (9-7 Liberty League). It is a total team effort for the Saints with five players recording over 20 3-pointers on the year and no one is averaging points in double figures. Sophomore Cara Waterson averages a team-high 9.5 points per game while junior Caroline Dalton and senior Lauren Quattrocchi are not far behind averaging 8.9 and 8.8 points per game, respectively. Quattrocchi averages a league-high 16.3 assists per contest and Dalton has a team-high 166 rebounds (6.9 per game). They also lead the team in steals and blocks—Dalton has 23 blocks and Quattrocchi recorded 52 steals.

The RIT Tigers (19-6, 12-4 Liberty League) earned the second seed in this year’s league tournament and they are hosting their first-ever postseason game in the program’s 29-year history when they play third-seeded Union on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Rochester. RIT leads the league in scoring, averaging 69.9 points per game, thanks in part to sophomore Jessica Glaz (16.6 points per game) and freshman Tara Lynch (15.5 points per game), both are ranking among the league scoring leaders (fourth and seventh). Glaz also set RIT’s single season scoring record at 407 points to close out the regular season in the Tigers final regular season game. Junior Julia Bender leads the team in rebounds, posting 6.6 boards per contest and steals with 1.6 per game while Maria Edwards paces the team in assists with 3.2 per game. Both Bender and Edwards are averaging 6.1 points per game, good for fourth on the team. As a team, Union leads the league in scoring defense (53.0) and field goal shooting percentage (0.427). The Dutchwomen have two players registering points in double figures in junior Natalie Leone (10.2 points per game) and junior Abby Katz (10.0 points per game). Leone also leads the team with 69 assists, good for tenth among league leaders. Freshman Sophie Borg (9.0 points per game) and senior Amy Fisher (8.8 points per game) round out the Dutchwomen’s top-four scorers. Classmate Erin Lyons is also one of the team’s top players with a team-high 41 steals and 14 blocks.
