WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW:

The University of Rochester will be seeking its eighth straight Liberty League women’s swimming and diving title heading into this weekend. The Yellowjackets compiled 1,728 points at last year’s championship, finishing only 186 points ahead of RPI, who had 1,542 points for second place and Vassar, who rounded out the top-three with 822 points. This season, both RPI and Rochester are ranked at 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Women’s Division III poll.

The Yellowjackets had a strong showing in the freestyle events last year, as they won all three freestyle relays, which included setting a meet-record time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.47). They also captured first-place in the 400-yard medley relay for a total of four relay wins. Individually, Jen Enos and Emily Simon had wins in the 100-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle as both return to the pool for their senior campaigns.

In the diving events, Rochester senior Danielle Neu will be a diver to watch as the three-time Liberty League Diver of the Week this season will be one of the top competitors. At last year’s championship, she was second in the 3-meter dive. RPI freshman Jessica Kugelman and William Smith sophomore Therese Mandracchia, both one-time Diver of the Week recipients will also compete.

RPI will be led by junior Shanny Lin and Danielle Sauve. Both competed in seven events, a year ago, for the Engineers, including a combined four relays. Lin had two first-place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly, including a meet record time in the 200. Sauve also had a meet record of her own in the 400-yard individual medley as well as a first-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle. Lin and Sauve also both made an appearance in the NCAA championship, with Lin earning All-America honors.

Vassar senior Julia Cunningham is also back, she is coming off back-to-back NCAA championship appearances, and most recently was named Swimmer of the Week twice by the Liberty League. Last season, she recorded four top-five finishes and had a hand in three relays for the Brewers. Caroline Conboy also returns for her senior campaign after getting the Swimmer of Meet nod, last year. She set meet records in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.40) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.23) while recording NCAA “B” cut times.

MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s swimming and diving team will be looking for its third title in four years as the Engineers edged out the University of Rochester by 94.5 points to secure their sixth title in 12 years. RPI finished with 1930.5 while the Yellowjackets finished in second with 1835 points and RIT was third (891).

Last year, RPI won the meet with wins in four individual events and two relays while consistently placing multiple swimmers among the top eight finishers in each event as the Engineers showcased their team depth. Richard Dong is back as he led the Engineers at last year’s championship with two wins in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.07) and the 100-yard breaststroke (58.63). Noah Pan also returns after an individual victory in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.54) last year.

Rochester was paced by Elliot Schwinn, who was named Rookie of the Meet with four individual event victories and three meet record times. He won and recorded meet-record times in both long distance freestyle events (500 and 1,650-yards) with times of 4:41.83 and 16:14.59, respectively. He also captured the 400-yard individual medley (4:11.11, also a meet record) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.88).

Union senior John Enquist is also be a key competitor as he broke a 20-year-old meet record last year in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.45.

In diving, last year’s Swimmer of the Meet, Sam Hoyt returns for his junior campaign. He won the 3-meter dive and was second in the 1-meter dive. This season’s Liberty League Diver of the Week accolades have been split between Rochester freshman Stephen Savchik and RPI sophomore Alex Chused. Chused has been recognized by the league office three times and Savchik, twice. Last year, Chused was ninth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at the championship.
