Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) will host the 2015 Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championship this Saturday, February 14 at Gordon Field House on the campus of RIT. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Teams competing in the Liberty League championship include RPI, St. Lawrence, Union and host RIT.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

St. Lawrence is in search of its fifth straight title, as the Saints have won nine of the last ten indoor championships.

St. Lawrence is led by two-time Liberty League Field Performer of the Year, senior Divya Biswal, who currently sports the league’s top marks in long jump (5.38 meters), triple jump (11.72 meters), 60 meter hurdles (9.28 seconds) and 60 meter dash (8.24). She captured three of the four events in the 2014 Liberty League championship. St. Lawrence also features three of the top-twenty mile times this season, including freshman Megan Kellogg, who is ranked 10th in the nation with a time of 5:04.56. Senior Cassia Hameline is 13th (5:05.52) and 2013-2014 Co-Rookie of the Year, Lisa Grohn is 19th (5:06.60). In addition, the St. Lawrence Distance Medley Relay team of Kellogg, Marisa Turner, Ashley Leta and Hameline is fourth in the nation after posting a time of 12:18.60.

RIT senior Amanda White ranks eighth in the nation in the 800 meters (2:15.60) and also has the top Liberty League time in the 400 meters (59.34). The Tigers’ Distance Medley Relay team of Liz Pieri, Meg Oliphant, Kelly Fredette and Kaylin Butler is among the top-ten in the nation with a time of 12:29.94. Sophomore Kendra Bush is ranked 42nd nationally in the shot put at 12.67 meters.

Also returning is St. Lawrence junior Marisa Turner, champion of the 400 meters and high jump and 2013-2014 Co-Rookie of the Year, sophomore Noemie Bechu of Union, who took a second place finish in the 200 meters and was part of the second-place 4x200 meter relay team last year.

MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

St. Lawrence will look to win its second consecutive championship after capturing the league title for the first time since 2011.

Saints’ junior Harrison Sloan, 2013-14 Track Performer of the Year returns to defend his title after winning the 800 meters and mile a year ago. Sloan was also part of the winning 4x400 meter relay team. Senior Trevor Bibb is tops in the league and ranked nationally in the 3,000 meters (41st, 8:42.71) after a sixth place finish a year ago. The St. Lawrence Distance Medley Relay Team of Joe Smith, Nick Crawford, Wesley Kirui and Sloan is ranked 16th in the nation with a time of 10:27.22.

It will be a competitive race in the 5,000 meters with RIT senior Matt Giannino leading the league and the nation in the event with a time of 14:25.01. Reigning 5,000 meter champion St. Lawrence sophomore Thomas Caulfield returns and he is currently ranked 10th nationally with a time of 14:50.10. Right behind him is teammate Trevor Bibb, who is ranked 11th with a time of 14:51.55.

Giannino also leads the league with the best mile time as he is ranked 27th in the nation with a time 4:18.89. RIT seniors Nick Perez and Joe Cronin are both ranked nationally in the pole vault, Perez is 22nd (4.61 meters) and Cronin is 42nd (4.50 meters).

For RPI, junior Tyler Yeastedt is ranked 10th in the nation in weight throw (18.00 meters) and 34th in the nation in shot put (15.39 meters) after finishing in the top three in both events at last year’s championship. Senior Benjamin Fazio leads the league and is 29th in the nation in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:40.69.

Other returning champions include RIT sophomore Jared Athias (60 meter hurdles), RPI seniors Dylan Landry (400 meters) and Devan Hayes (weight throw). Also of RPI, junior Bobby Parker will defend his 3,000 meter crown.
