Women’s Soccer Awards Announced; Buckley selected Player of the Year
2014 Liberty League Women’s Soccer Awards
Player of the Year: Madeline Buckley, Sr., Forward, William Smith College
For the second straight year, a William Smith senior has been named Liberty League Player of the Year. Madeline Buckley sits atop the Liberty League in goals (11), goals per game (.611) as well as points (27) and points per game (1.5). She is tied for second in game-winning goals with four and she netted a career-high three goals in a game against Vassar. Buckley was named Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week two times this season.
Defensive Player of the Year: Zoe Jackson Gibson, Jr., Defender, William Smith College
William Smith College junior defender Zoe Jackson Gibson helped the Herons to 15 wins this season while registering 12 shutouts. Jackson Gibson and the William Smith defense allowed a league-low of only seven goals with just three goals coming in Liberty League play. The Herons are currently riding a 14-game unbeaten streak as they head into the NCAA Tournament.
Rookie of the Year: Tori Riopelle, Fr., Goalkeeper, RPI
A starter in every game this season, RPI freshman goalkeeper Tori Riopelle led the Engineers to a 13-6-1 overall record and 6-2 mark in the Liberty League. Her 0.71 goals against average is currently fourth in RPI history and her save percentage of .835 is 13th. She was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week three times and in 1757 minutes played, Riopelle made 69 saves while recording five shutouts.
Coaching Staff of the Year: William Smith College – Aliceann Wilber, Head Coach; Chas Allen & Keith Perrigo, Assistant Coaches
The coaching staff at William Smith directed the Herons to a 15-2-1 record and an undefeated mark in league play at 8-0 for the second consecutive season. The Herons are the Liberty League regular season champions, for the eighth straight year, and are ranked No. 7 in the latest National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA) poll. William Smith is 13th in the nation in goals against average (0.42), 20th in win percentage (.844), and 29th in shutout percentage (.625).
