Skidmore falls 10-2 to Farmingdale in NCAA Baseball opener
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Host Farmingdale State pounded out 17 hits on the way to a 10-2 win over Skidmore College in the first game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at the Farmingdale State Baseball Complex.
The 5th seed Thoroughbreds (30-16) will play sixth-seeded Castleton State in an elimination game on Thursday at 12 p.m. Castleton lost to top-seeded Cortland 7-6. The Rams (30-10) will play the winner of fourth-seeded Misericordia and third-seeded Ithaca.
Skidmore got on the board first in the top of the second when Erik Watkins walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a Zack Rudman’s 15th double of the season.
The Rams tied it 1-1 with an unearned run in their half of the second. Farmingdale plated three in the fourth to go up 4-1. Ryan McAllister opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a long single from Matthew Zsevc. David Zilnicki drilled a triple to right field to score Zsevc and then scored on an RBI single from Edward Bergmann.
The Thoroughbreds cut it to 4-2 in the fifth when Matty Tatkow singled, stole second, moved to third on a two-out single by Jesse Frehling and then scored on an RBI single from Geoff Green, who extended his reached base streak to 18 games.
Thomas Rydzewski doubled down the right field line with two outs in the sixth and then scored on an RBI single by Anthony Alvino to make it 5-2.
The Rams tacked on three more with two outs in the seventh to open it up, 8-2. McAllister started the rally with a first-pitch double.
The final FSC runs came with two out in the eighth for the 10-2 final.
Rudman finished 3-4 with an RBI.
Jordan Keysor (6-5) took the loss. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 13 hits, with four strikeouts and two walks. He picked-off a team-record three runners.
Chris Phelan (9-1) got the win, allowing two runs on four hits with eight strikes in five innings.
